transparency (trăns-pârˈən-sē, -părˈ-)►

January 3 marks the seating of new and old members for the 116th Congress of the United States. Much of the rhetoric embedded in speeches and press reports will keynote the word, transparency.

The One Hundred Sixteenth United States Congress is the current meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Washington, DC, is the meeting location, as we all know.

  • n.A transparent object, especially a photographic slide that is viewed by light shining through it from behind or by projection.
  • n.The quality or state of being transparent.

Who is ’Transparent California’?
… and why should you care?
Los Angeles school won’t explain mysterious $782,000 payout to former superintendent, as auditors call for fraud investigation

When the SOURCE, Transparent California, asked about the unusual payout, Mr. Suarez refused to provide any information, asserting that the “Public Records Act creates no duty to answer written or oral questions submitted by members of the public.”

VIA Mental Floss – Dec 27, 2018 – Beginning in 2019, Americans will no longer need to make 30 phone calls to figure out how much it will cost to deliver a baby or get an X-ray. According to Newsweek, a new federal rule will require hospitals across the country to list their prices…
NUZZEL All U.S. Hospitals Will Now Be Required to List Their Prices Online

GET MY FREE REPORT

Retirement from a nearly 40-year career in hospital and healthcare fund-development and community relations in 2010 did not end my association with or concern for that industry. In fact, I often share that I really did not know hospitals until I became (circa 2006) a cancer patient, now about to mark 9 years of continuous remission.

The story NUZZELED at the top of this post archives a universal concern about health care today. The issue is how best to discover the true costs, aka pricing, of hospital services, procedures, and products?

Despite the new Federal law requiring hospitals to be more transparent about pricing, we are reminded that the actual cost for any given test, procedure, or diagnostic may vary depending on the patient’s specific health insurance or Medicare plan. According to the source, “some nonprofit hospitals also factor one’s income into the equation when tallying up costs, so that should change the grand total, too. Even if it still requires a little guesswork on your part, this new transparency when it comes to health care costs is a welcome change.”

Q ▶ What has been the true cost of US Post-911 Wars?

  • Over 480,000 have died due to direct war violence, and several times as many indirectly
  • Over 244,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the fighting
  • 21 million — the number of war refugees and displaced persons
  • The US federal price tag for the post-9/11 wars is over $5.9 trillion dollars
  • The US government is conducting counterterror activities in 76 countries
  • The wars have been accompanied by violations of human rights and civil liberties, in the US and abroad ▶ SOURCE
Just days before his election in 2016, then POTUS candidate Trump issued this statement.

The so-called truth finders in the mainstream media and the world wide web have much fodder for content creation when they examine and test the statements of political leaders like the 45thPOTUS.

With the recent Trump proclamation that U.S. troups will be taken out of Afghanistan and Syria, combined with the Trump request for $5.6 billion to build a Southern Border Wall, focus is given on how past and current defense spending may allow for the wall expenditure. See wall (wôl)

Consider this: $5.7 trillion proposed for the Southern Border Wall by President Trump is 0.00096610169% of the estimated actual funds spent on Post911 wars.

As of January 2009, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that it had more than 580 miles (930 km) of barriers in place. The total length of the continental border is 1,989 miles (3,201 km). The “We The People Will Fund The Wall” campaign started… According to this SOURCE, the Mexico–United States barrier (Spanish: barrera México–Estados Unidos) is a series of walls and fences along the Mexico–United States border aimed at preventing illegal crossings from Mexico into the United States. The barrier is not one contiguous structure, but a grouping of relatively short physical walls, secured in between with a “virtual fence” which includes a system of sensors and cameras monitored by the United States Border Patrol.

FLIP③ ▶Since the launch of this campaign on Dec. 16 the voluntary efforts to raise money for President Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border exceeds $16 million… The 1,954-mile (3,145 km) border between the United States and Mexico traverses a variety of terrains, including urban areas and deserts. The barrier is located on both urban and uninhabited sections of the border, areas where the most concentrated numbers of illegal crossings and drug trafficking have been observed in the past. These urban areas include San Diego, California and El Paso, Texas. As of August 29, 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had built 190 miles (310 km) of pedestrian border fence and 154.3 miles (248.3 km) of vehicle border fence, for a total of 344.3 miles (554.1 km) of fence. From one of America’s most prominent philanthropists, an eye-opening, myth-busting new perspective on the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Howard G. Buffett has seen first-hand the devastating impact of cheap Mexican heroin and other opiate cocktails across America. Fueled by failing border policies and lawlessness in Mexico and Central America, drugs are pouring over the nation’s southern border in record quantities, turning Americans into addicts and migrants into drug mules–and killing us in record numbers.

Politicians talk about a border crisis and an opioid crisis as separate issues. To Buffett, a landowner on the U.S. border with Mexico and now a sheriff in Illinois, these are intimately connected. Ineffective border policies not only put residents in border states like Texas and Arizona in harm’s way, they put American lives in states like Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Vermont at risk.

Mexican cartels have grown astonishingly powerful by exploiting both the gaps in our border security strategy and the desperation of migrants–all while profiting enormously off America’s growing addiction to drugs. The solution isn’t a wall. In this groundbreaking book, Buffett outlines a realistic, effective, and bi-partisan approach to fighting cartels, strengthening our national security, and tackling the roots of the chaos below the border. ▶ AMAZON XNG … Just Amazing!

Could this happen?  Private philanthropy via an internet-waged campaign to help build the Southern Border Wall with a goal of $1billion and $14.5 given by some 238,000 donors as of 21Dec18.  But a major roadblock to success may happen when Democrats take control of Congress in January.

My 40-some-year experience in nonprofit hospital development (fund-raising and philanthropy) taught me numerous times that charity imparted through government largess is a dicey matter, not always what seems,  nor giving granted without certain control.

Time will tell if this effort to raise private funds for the Southern Border Wall will be successful.  Most likely, a portion of the $5 billion will be raised this way.  But then again, a public-private partnership in this endeavor just may be the ticket to bring the project to fruition.

Frequently, I am now using my iPad mini for video captures of family events, so I have searched for and found a number of accessories that help with that task, like this TRIPOD (left) and the protective CASE (below)

As a still camera and a video recording device, the iPad mini is a great tool, although a bit bulky to handle. Of course, dropping the device is a worry. So, these accessories, including the Padlette D2 Gray strap (below) are worthy investments if you want better protection for your iPad.

Apple equipped the latest iPad mini with pretty nice cameras. The 5-megapixel iSight camera takes terrific stills and lets you capture 1080p video, or the highest of the high-definition specifications. Another bonus is that it has built-in video stabilization, which helps compensate for a slightly jittery videographer.

Kevin O’Connor (born April 4, 1961) is an American entrepreneur and co-founder of Graphiq, a research engine founded in Santa Barbara in 2009.Previously, O’Connor was a co-founder of DoubleClick, an internet advertisement-technology, and founder of O’Connor Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in early stage companies, including 9Star, Surfline, Travidia, Procore and CampusExplorer.

Sheer brilliance? While O’Connor is very smart indeed, he credits his success to applying Thomas Edison’s famous saying that “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” In other words, the breakthrough product or service that is the result of sheer genius alone is the exception.

Great ideas that form the basis of new companies or that can make a hero of someone toiling in the corporate world are within reach of us all.

“But wait,” says O’Connor, “ideas are cheap.” Just as important is doing something with them—a process that will turn the best ideas into something that people need. In other words, O’Connor argues convincingly, innovation can be systematically forced.

The Map of Innovation is O’Connor’s step-by-step approach to devising lucrative new products and services and bringing them to market, through a process that has proven itself time and again in many different industries. Too often, people trying to innovate focus on things that don’t matter or waste their time trying to find answers to questions that can’t be answered. O’Connor shows why the map of innovation centers on getting right the five make-or-break fundamentals: creating a large number of viable ideas; picking the right idea to pursue; creating a highly focused strategy to bring the idea to market; getting the money to fund the strategy; and hiring the best people. With Kevin O’Connor, the proof of the value of methodical innovation is in the pudding. He helped start companies that have employed thousands of people and created billions in shareholder value.

Anyone can get lucky once, but for success to strike three times and to include many successful products, there has to be a method and map, and any company, big or small, working on any product or service can benefit from O’Connor’s time-tested tactics.

Financial Bounty Hunters Testify: Clinton Foundation Operated As Foreign Agent

NUZZEL this SocialCurrentSee

According to these sources, two financial investigators say they have submitted thousands of documents to the IRS that they believe show the Clinton Foundation, founded by Bill and Hillary Clinton, potentially evaded paying taxes on millions if not billions of dollars, a House subcommittee on government operations heard Dec. 13.

The Clinton Foundation (founded in 1997 as the William J. Clinton Foundationand from 2013 to 2015 briefly renamed the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation)is a non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code. It was established by former President of the United States Bill Clinton with the stated mission to “strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence.”Its offices are located in New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Through 2016 the foundation had raised an estimated $2 billion from U.S. corporations, foreign governments and corporations, political donors, and various other groups and individuals. The acceptance of funds from wealthy donors has been a source of controversy. The foundation “has won accolades from philanthropy experts and has drawn bipartisan support”.Charitable grants are not a major focus of the Clinton Foundation, which instead uses most of its money to carry out its own humanitarian programs.

This foundation is a public organization to which anyone may donate and is distinct from the Clinton Family Foundation, a private organization for personal Clinton family philanthropy.

According to the Clinton Foundation’s website, neither Bill Clinton nor his daughter, Chelsea Clinton (both are members of the governing board), draws any salary or receives any income from the Foundation. When Hillary Clinton was a board member she reportedly also received no income from the Foundation.

As one who worked for about 40 years in the healthcare community in fund-development (philanthropy and community relations), I often admit that I really got my education in healthcare when I became a cancer patient in 2006.  That story is told in other posts and content that are basically archived in this FLIPBOARD.

But this post is less personal and more of an introduction to discovery about the topic, DNA.  Given that my cancer survival, now almost 13 years post-DX (diagnosis), is largely due to the science of DNA, the topic remains a focus of my attention.

In 1962, long before DNA was of any significant concern to me, Maurice Wilkins, Francis Crick, and James Watson received the Nobel Prize, but it was Rosalind Franklin’s data and photographs of DNA that led to their discovery.

At this LINK, Brenda Maddox tells a powerful story of a remarkably single-minded, forthright, and tempestuous young woman who, at the age of fifteen, decided she was going to be a scientist, but who was airbrushed out of the greatest scientific discovery of the twentieth century.
