tornadoes.  Given the outpouring of concern that Oklahoma musicians have shown toward their home state this week (see Toby Keith and Blake Shelton), it should come as no surprise that yet another native Oklahoman has come forth to help. Nanotech visionary would sweat the small stuff

23May13 }:{  Reports trending today give details about the death of 1986 Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Rohrer.  One of the latest uses of Dr. Rohrer’s invention came this year, when I.B.M. scientists made what they call history’s tiniest stop-action film, as verified by Guinness World Records. Called “A Boy and His Atom,” the film assembles atoms into the image of a small boy and shows him dancing, bouncing about and playing catch with an atom. It was made by moving atoms frame by frame — 250 frames in all — and magnifying them 100 million times.

Dr. Rohrer, who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing a microscope that made it possible to see individual atoms and move them around, an achievement that led to vastly faster computing and greatly advanced molecular biology, died on Thursday night or early Friday morning in Wollerau, Switzerland. He was 79.

Peace Pilgrim (1908 – 1981), born Mildred Lisette Norman, was a pacifist, vegetarian, and peace activist. The spiritual classic Steps Toward Inner Peace is a transcript of a 1964 talk she gave on KPFK radio in Los Angeles, California. In that year she completed 25,000 miles on foot for peace and stopped counting miles but continued to walk on her pilgrimage for another 17 years. Her only possessions were the cloths on her back and the few items she carried in the pockets of her blue tunic which read “PEACE PILGRIM” on the front and “25,000 MILES ON FOOT FOR PEACE” on the back. She had no organizational backing, carried no money, and would not even ask for food or shelter. It had to be offered without asking. For 28 years all her needs were met. “Aren’t people good,” she would often say. She spoke to all who would listen about the entire peace picture; peace among nations, peace among groups, and the very important “inner peace” because she believed that was where peace began.. – See more at this alt@link

One startling fact: A hallmark of our time

According to the PRC a couple the years ago, 2011 Jan. 1, the oldest members of the Baby Boom generation celebrated their 65th birthday. In fact, on that day, every day since, and for every day for the next 17 years, 10,000 baby boomers will reach age 65.

The aging of this huge cohort of Americans (26% of the total U.S. population are Baby Boomers) will dramatically change the composition of the country. By 2030, when all members of the Baby Boom generation have reached that age, fully 18% of the nation will be at least that age, according to Pew Research Center (PRC) population projections. But don’t tell Baby Boomers that they are old.

In fact, according to the source, the typical Boomer believes that “old age” does not begin until age 72, according to a 2009 PRC survey. Also, while about half of all adults say they feel younger than their actual age, fully 61% of Boomers are feeling more spry than their age would imply.
