While teaching at Howard, she met Harold Morrison, a Jamaican architect, whom she married in 1958. She was pregnant with their second son when she and Harold divorced in 1964.

With that event in common, we might assume that Mac has even a stronger bond now with Toni Morrison, prompting the oft-quoted line: “Remember that moment when you first encountered a character who seemed to be written just for you?”

Mac Bezos, born MacKenzie Tuttle, studied under Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison while at Princeton. Morrison, who was Bezos’s thesis advisor and connected Bezos to her ICM agent Amanda Urban, told Vogue that Bezos was “one of the best students I’ve ever had in my creative-writing classes . . . really one of the best.”
